Sure Symptoms of Alcoholism

Alcoholism is a common problem around the globe. In many countries, the problem has become nearly epidemic. In the United States it is estimated that 60% of adults use alcohol at least infrequently, 20% of them report having five or more drinks on any given day. Five or more drinks are enough to become intoxicated. If you are concerned about a friend or loved one who is drinking you should know some of the sure signs and symptoms of alcoholism.

One of the first signs that a person is in trouble with alcohol is when they have done something while drinking, got into legal trouble and then repeated to action at a later time. For instance if you know someone who has been arrested or ticketed for being drunk in public and yet they still continue to get inebriated and go out in public, there is a better than average chance they are an alcoholic.

Other symptoms of alcoholism are strangely enough the level of tolerance a person has to alcohol. The number one clue that someone is or can be an alcoholic is an extremely high tolerance to alcohol. Normally when people drink for the first time they begin to feel the effects very quickly, because the body is not used to the chemicals. Someone with a genetic predisposition to alcoholism will be able to “handle” their liquor quite well from day one.

After alcohol abuse has progressed for some time, there are symptoms of alcoholism that are more pronounced. A person suffering from alcoholism may have redness on the face or cheeks; often times the nose is the first facial feature to become rosy when a person abuses alcohol.

If you or a loved one is suffering from blackouts while drinking this is a tell tale symptom of alcoholism. The overload of alcohol causes problems with memory and as the level of alcohol in the blood continues to increase the chances of a black out become more pronounced. It has been said that if drugs and alcohol were tools alcohol would be a sledgehammer!

A person who cannot go for an extended period without drinking is exhibiting classic symptoms of alcoholism. The addiction has become both mental and physical. Some people might fool you since they do not drink all week while working but then really tie one on when the weekend comes around.

Make no mistake they are still showing symptoms of alcoholism, they are just classified differently. Those who abstain for long time periods and then drink large amounts all at one time are considered binge drinkers, but still alcoholics.

Finally

Having a friend or family member who is suffering and exhibiting the symptoms of alcoholism can be hard. You might feel like they could just stop if they wanted to, but often that is not the case. In fact, the single most dangerous drug to quit is alcohol. There are more deaths from withdrawals from alcohol than any other drug. If you are dealing with alcoholism find a local support group, AA and others are specialists when it comes to drugs and alcohol and their help can be invaluable.
