Anyone who has experienced alcoholism directly or indirectly knows that it is a real struggle for the sufferer to stop drinking alcohol. For some people an occasional drink is okay but for others it leads to a lifelong dependency or addiction to alcohol in which the sufferer cannot function without drinking.

In order to stop drinking alcohol successfully the alcoholic must first admit that they have a problem. Without this admission and the realization that they are powerless over the dependency, they will not stop drinking alcohol. Often an alcoholic will have to hit rock bottom before they come to this realization.

Hitting Bottom

Reaching the bottom of an addiction to alcohol will look differently for different people. For some it will be the loss of their employment or financial security. Being fired or waking up with a hangover to realize your entire life savings is gone is all the wakeup call some people will need to stop drinking alcohol.

However not everyone will stop there, for these people it will take a catastrophic event to shake them up. The effects of alcohol have torn entire families apart. A man or woman may find himself or herself without family, money or even a place to live before they decide to stop drinking alcohol.

A major illness can also be the bottom of the pit for an alcoholic. Alcohol is hard on the body; it can affect brain function, nervous system, and cause cirrhosis of the liver. Sadly, some or all of these affects are not reversible even once the alcoholic stop drinking alcohol.

Programs

When a person has hit the bottom or decided that drinking has become too big of a problem, there are programs to help. It is highly advised that the first person an alcoholic contacts to stop drinking alcohol is a medical professional.

Of all the drugs available on this planet, alcohol withdrawal has the high rate of direct cause death. A heroin addict is unlikely to die just from the withdrawal of the drug; there is usually an underlying medical condition.

However, an alcoholic who is healthy in every other way can die as a direct result of withdrawal from alcohol. This is because alcohol acts as a depressant to the central nervous system, over time the system becomes desensitized. When you stop drinking alcohol suddenly all the synapses can begin to rapid fire resulting in anxiety, delirium, seizures and heart failure.

To prevent this from happening when you stop drinking alcohol you should be monitored by a medical professional or even enter a detoxification program through a treatment facility. You can be provided with prescription medications that will lessen the effect of the detoxification period and prevent the occurrence of the above-mentioned withdrawals.

Alcoholics Anonymous is another great program you can look into when you want to stop drinking alcohol. They are a non-profit support organization that seeks to teach alcoholics how to deal with issues in life without alcohol.
