Signs Of Alcoholism

With the understanding that different people have different signs of alcoholism, some more pronounced than what others feel, and vice versa, most agree though that there are many signs of alcoholism, some never felt by any particular given alcoholic. Others perceive the signs early because they are so blatant.

Some say that what makes an alcoholic as opposed to a person who is not an alcoholic, is that with an alcoholic, alcohol has become their focus. A social even that does not involve alcohol is an event where they will not be able to enjoy themselves. Going to a bar or making a drink at home following a day of work is more important to them than actually being able to connect with family or friends.

If they have a troubled relationship, they drink to avoid those associated painful feelings. Worst yet, is if they have resorted to truly dangerous behavior or even violent behavior. Whenever someone is found to have increased dependence upon alcohol then they are on their way to suffering from alcoholism.

If drinking has become more and more important in someone’s life including family, friends and jobs, then that’s one of the signs of alcoholism that cannot be overlooked. Or if their judgment becomes impaired to a dangerous level, such as driving drunk, then again, that is considered a sign. While alcohol abuse will lead to alcoholism, the two are not the same.

The abuser still retains a modicum of control over the drinking so that they can still hold a job and keep relationships, but when that person feels that alcohol is absolutely necessary to function, it has turned to alcoholism. The change may be overnight when spurred on by a life-changing event for instance, such as loss of job, divorce, or the loss of someone dear to the now alcoholic.

Signs of alcoholism include this important one: alcoholics become experts in denial. They will drastically underestimate the amount of time lost from family and work, as well as deny how high the monetary cost is to them, and mostly they deny how much they are actually drinking. The sense of denial is considered powerful enough that an alcoholic will genuinely accept as true that the drinking is not causing any problems whatsoever.

Thus, those who show concern over their drinking, be they family or friends, will be lashed out at so vehemently that the concerned person may be led to believe that they’ve exaggerated the perceived problem.

Once denial joins the signs of alcoholism, chances are very good that the alcoholic will then try to mitigate any problems by blaming others instead of themselves. Thus it becomes someone else’s problem, be that an unfair boss, a nagging significant other or a friend’s haughtiness. Thus relationships fall apart as do the finances and work.
