Alcohol Facts
There are just so many “wives’ tales” being told about alcohol, that facts that have been proven are difficult to sort through. However there are a lot of proven
alcohol facts, if one will only perform the research required.
For instance, if you are tested by a Breathalyzer, you will register the same level of
alcohol in your body regardless of the drink you chose. Thus, a 5-ounce normal glass of red or white wine, a 12-ounce can or bottle of regular beer, or a 1.5 ounce serving consisting of distilled spirits (80 proof) whether drunk in a mixed drink or straight will all register the same.
Some
alcohol facts debunk some interesting poor theories. For instance, the word about town says that men can drink more than women because they are taller and bigger and thus won’t show the
effects of alcohol as much as women. The fact is that all women will show effects of alcohol more quickly than a man since they have a bit higher ratio of fat compared to lean muscular tissue.
This makes it easier for their bodies to concentrate alcohol within that low percentage of water in their bodies. It has also been proven that they lack the
higher percentage of dehydrogenase, which is an enzyme used by our bodies to break down alcohol. Further it has been assumed that the hormonal changes caused by a woman’s menstrual cycle may perhaps affect the absorption of alcohol as well.
There are times when one wonders where people have gotten their
alcohol facts since they appear so off the wall, but some make a modicum of sense and thus those facts just need to be substantiated better. Case in point, it is a widely held belief that alcohol advertisements increase drinking problems. Serious research has gone into this one, in fact there have been hundreds of hours spent in research on this “fact” all around the world.
What the studies have agreed to is the plain fact that there is no way that alcohol advertising increases
drinking problems, nor creates increases in drinking abuse. The true alcohol facts are that alcohol advertising has always been around and billions are spent in alcohol advertising because having an effective ad will definitely increase that particular brand’s share of the total alcohol market.
Other times, the alcohol facts are buried under the use of semantics, or words that have been turned around in such a way as to make a particular point. As an example there are many who believe that alcohol is the direct cause of alcoholism. This must have been the “basis in fact” used with Prohibition, which caused
tremendous problems in America! Apparently the believers of this erroneous manner of thinking simply overlook the fact that if alcohol was the direct cause of alcoholism then anyone who ever had even one responsible drink would be considered an alcoholic.
