Alcohol depression is so common because people tend to turn to alcohol to help them feel better. On the other hand, alcohol can also lead to depression. Alcohol is a depressant that naturally lowers the mood. A person who drinks regularly may begin to feel symptoms of depression as a natural side effect of their drinking. Studies have shown that it is more common for men to start with an alcohol problem that turns into depression and for women to start with depression that turns into an alcohol problem.

Alcohol depresses the body, working largely in the brain. It may cause a temporary feeling of relief from depression symptoms, but as soon as the effects wear off it can leave a person in a deeper depression. In people who have a problem with alcohol prior to depression, the addiction to the substance is what can lead to alcohol depression.

Treatment Options

Most often depression is treated with medication. However, in a person with alcohol depression, medication is not suitable if the person does not stop drinking. Mixing alcohol and depression medication can cause serious side effects and is extremely harmful.

In a person with alcohol depression the best step would be counseling. Until a person is free from their alcohol addiction, treating the depression with any medication is not an option. A person may even need to be hospitalized if there is a concern about the person’s well being.

In many cases of alcohol depression, suicide rates are higher than in people who just have depression. Alcohol deepens the depression and can lead people to feel lower lows than they would if they were not using alcohol.

It is extremely important that a person with depression learns not to treat their problem with alcohol. Treatment options are more varied if a person is not using alcohol while depressed.

Alcohol depression is a serious issue. In people with depression who are using alcohol both diseases must be treated. A person can get into a deep cycle of addiction to the alcohol which makes treating the depression very difficult. For many people recognizing the addiction or even accepting the diagnosis of depression can be difficult.

Many people fail to see their problem, which can lead to not getting treatment. Suicide rates among people who use alcohol and are depressed are much higher than in people who have only one of the problems. That is why seeking treatment for both conditions is essential to a full recovery.
