Alcholism
The majority of adults can drink moderately thus alcohol is not destructive to them. Unfortunately, modern science tells us that almost 17.6 million people in the United States either have an alcohol problem or are truly alcohol dependent alcoholics, thus you can see that
alcholism is a huge problem in the United States.
Medically you are described as having a problem with
alcholism if you have strong needs to drink, considered undeniable cravings for alcohol. Further, if you lose
control of the drinking, meaning that you are not able to stop once you’ve begun drinking. It is said that you have a problem if you suffer from a true physical dependence that results in feeling
withdrawal symptoms if you try to stop drinking, such as shakiness, sweating or nausea. Also, if you feel the need to drink more and more larger amounts of alcohol to feel the same “high” or “buzz” that was accomplished with a lesser amount of drinks before.
The way that this was accomplished was through a long-term study that involved almost 300 men to measure their reaction to
drinking alcohol when they were between the ages 18 and 25. The same men were then tested once more 10 years later and again using five-year intervals. It was found that if a man has a low level of response when given alcohol at the start that this will accurately predict if there will be drinking disorders such as
alcholism in those men\'s future. This held true regardless of many other factors.
We are told also by a plethora of medical authorities that alcholism carries with it many serious medical dangers. For instance, if you are a
heavy drinker, you may have increased your risk of different types of cancers. Or, you may actually damage your organs such as the brain and your liver, to mention only two.
Being an alcoholic greatly increases your risk of dying in a car crash or suffering other egregious injuries. Your risk of performing a homicide is also greater, as is the chance of you committing suicide. If you become pregnant alcholism may easily cause serious birth defects. Clinical as well as experimental research have unearthed that those who drink in order to better cope with what is termed as the “blues” will be much more prone, or let’s say vulnerable, to having
a greater risk of alcohol dependence, or alcholism, as well as probably becoming clinically depressed.
In order to make the effects of environment and genes unimportant and inapplicable, they used twins who were 30 years and older. One of their findings further brought to light that males were much more likely to turn to drink in order to
manage any moods.
